Cocktail of the Week: Autumn Spiced Vodka Tonic

Let’s be honest, the vodka tonic isn’t exactly an exciting cocktail option. I’m not knocking it, there are certainly times when you just need the simple, no-frill, enjoyment of this fizzy mainstay.

But, when you’re craving something a little extra and you just happen to have a bushel of apples sitting on your kitchen counter from your very basic weekend excursion, it’s time to spice things up with this seasonal twist on the classic vodka tonic. It does involve a little prep work since you have to infuse your vodka but I promise it’s not complicated and completely worth the wait.

Ingredients for infusion

  • 2 large apples — any variety will do
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 (750 ml) bottle of vodka — brand doesn’t matter

One Serving Recipe

  • 1 1/2 ounces of apple cinnamon-infused vodka
  • 6 ounces of tonic water
  • Splash of simple syrup
  • Apple slice for garnish

Cut the apples into large chunks and remove any seeds. Pour your vodka in a large glass jar with a tight-fitting lid and add the cut apples. Shake vigorously. Store the jar in a cool, dry place for at least three days but up to seven. I recommend tasting the vodka every day starting on the third day until it reaches the taste level you like. About one day before it reaches your ideal taste, add the cinnamon stick and shake again.

To make the cocktail, fill a highball glass with ice, add the vodka first, then simple syrup, followed by the tonic water. Garnish with the apple slice and enjoy!

Make this recipe your own by adding any other fall elements you enjoy like pears or nutmeg. The possibilities are endless.
